The three letterpress copy books in this series cover the period 1875-1878. Although a continuous chronology is not maintained in the individual books, it is possible to follow the complete chronology by reading the letterbooks in the following order:
The letters relate to telegraphy, the electric pen and duplicating press, duplicating ink, etheric force, the telephone, the phonograph, the electric light, and other subjects. Edison companies referred to include the Edison Electrical Pen & Duplicating Press Co., Edison Foreign Pen Co., Edison Speaking Phonograph Co., and Edison Electric Light Co.
Approximately 40 percent of the material in the three letterbooks presents problems in legibility due to faint ink, bleedthrough, smearing, and staining. All three books contain thin tissue pages which in many instances have been wrinkled, frayed, or ripped. Pages that are completely illegible and pages that are merely duplicate copies of other letterbook pages have not been selected. Courtesy of Thomas Edison National Historical Park.
