This letterbook covers the period August-October 1878. Most of the correspondence is by Charles E. Bailey, who succeeded Charles A. Cheever as company treasurer. Among the recipients are Edison, Painter, and various other company officials including George H. Bliss, George L. Bradley, Charles A. Cheever, and Gardiner G. Hubbard. There are also numerous letters addressed to phonograph exhibitors throughout the United States and Canada. The correspondence pertains primarily to the exhibition of the phonograph by company agents. Some of the letters discuss the difficulties encountered in teaching exhibitors how to operate the machines correctly. The book contains 490 numbered pages and an index. Approximately 10 percent of the letters have been selected.
