These documents consist of correspondence, news clippings, and other items by and about Madeleine Edison Sloane (1888-1979), oldest child of Thomas Edison and Mina Miller Edison. The first item is a humorous poem, probably written in 1931 shortly after the birth of Madeleine's youngest son Michael Edison Sloane, expressing regret that Michael was not a girl. Also included are a newspaper clipping from 1961 entitled "Edison's Daughter Helps Launch New Polaris Sub" regarding Madeleine's sponsorship of the USS Thomas A. Edison (SSBN-610); a 1972 letter from Madeleine to her cousin Margaret Miller Newman in which she discusses various paintings at Glenmont and mentions her disagreement with her brother Charles about the disposition of the contents of Glenmont at the time it was transferred to the National Park Service; and a 1995 New York Times interview with Madeleine's grandson David E. E. Sloane. Courtesy of the Chautauqua Institution Archives, Oliver Archives Center
